As for God, well, he never ceases to amaze me. Early this week, we found out that the U.S. Embassy and the CDC is now requiring children who are adopted from our son's country to be tested for tuberculosis before they will be issued a passport. We were comfortable with that knowing that Baby O's medical records indicate he has had a vaccine against TB, not to mention he's had various images taken of his chest due to cardio issues. Being that he's had the vaccine, we've opted for a blood test because the usual skin test can return a false positive for children who have been vaccinated.
Fast forward a few days and we realize that this testing for TB means so much more than a simple blood test. The Embassy is requiring that this testing must be done by the clinic at the Embassy. It can not be done by the orphanage doctor. The clinic at the Embassy will not conduct the TB test until the passport is applied for. The passport must be applied for in person by the child's parents. The test then takes at least 48 hours to complete. If the test returns as a positive, a chest x-ray must be conducted to rule out active TB.
Our family is not really concerned with whether or not Baby O has TB. We are choosing to rest in the fact that God provided him with a TB vaccine when he was younger, and that with his health issues, his chest has been examined and listened to on many occasions. What concerned The Daddy Guy and myself is that this will extend our time in his country. Not only would we incur extra hotel and food expenses, but we'll have to be away from our kids for a longer period of time. We may have to be in his country anywhere from three to five days longer than we originally expected.
This is where we are reminded that we have a God who actively goes before us. (Psst... look up at the header at the top of my blog. See that verse? Psalm 139:4,5 tells us "You know everything I’m going to say before I start the first sentence. I look behind me and you’re there, then up ahead and you’re there, too— your reassuring presence, coming and going." ) Why, then, am I astounded to see that the amount that went above and beyond our expectations will pay for our extra time in Eastern Europe? None of this caught God by surprise. He knew Baby O before we were even aware of his existence. He has led us on this winding, crazy, path. He has held my hand when I wanted to pull my hair out. And He has been in the details. If that isn't crazy love, I don't know what is.
